Frequently Asked Questions

Shop with confidence - your questions answered.

How do I start a home-based craft business?

Starting a craft business from home takes both creativity and planning. Hereโ€™s a simple roadmap many makers follow:

  1. Perfect your craft โ€“ Practice your projects until you feel confident in quality and consistency.
  2. Get feedback โ€“ Share items with friends or family and use their input to refine your products.
  3. Identify your niche โ€“ Decide what makes your business unique. Focus on the products youโ€™re most passionate about, and how they stand out from others.
  4. Register your business โ€“ Choose a name and register it with your state.
  5. Get licensed for taxes โ€“ Apply for a tax ID or license so you can legally collect and pay sales tax.
  6. Open a business bank account โ€“ Keep your finances organized and track expenses separately from personal spending.
  7. Consider professional help โ€“ A small business accountant can save you time and help you set up bookkeeping the right way.

Starting small is fine - what matters is building a strong foundation so your business can grow.

How do I price my handmade products?

Pricing can feel tricky, but there are two proven methods most handmade businesses use. The biggest mistake new makers make is trying to combine them โ€” adding an hourly rate on top of a full markup โ€” which can price products out of the market. Pick one method and stick with it:

  1. Simple Markup Method โ€“ Add up your material costs and multiply by 4. This covers your expenses, leaves room for wholesale or bulk discounts, and builds in profit. Try not to go below a 2x markup to keep your work sustainable.

  2. Materials + Hourly Rate Method โ€“ Add the cost of your materials plus an hourly rate for your time, usually around $20 per hour. This method works well if your products are time-intensive and you want a clearer view of how much youโ€™re earning for your labor.

Whichever method you choose, check your local competition to make sure your prices are competitive while still valuing your work.

Where can I sell my handmade crafts?

There are many ways to get your handmade products in front of buyers. Most makers start small and expand as their confidence and inventory grow. Here are some of the most common places to sell:

  • Online platforms โ€“ Etsy, Facebook Marketplace, or your own website make it easy to reach buyers nationwide.

  • Local craft shows & pop-up shops โ€“ Great for meeting customers in person and testing new products.

  • Consignment stores โ€“ Partner with local shops to place your items on their shelves in exchange for a sales commission.

  • Private label for local boutiques โ€“ Offer to produce custom items under a boutiqueโ€™s brand name.

  • Fundraisers โ€“ Team up with school clubs, daycare centers, or youth sports teams who often need items they can resell for fundraising.

Many successful makers use a mix of online and in-person sales to build both a local following and an online customer base.

Why are personalized and custom products a good business idea?

Personalized products are one of the fastest-growing categories in handmade sales because customers love items that feel unique and meaningful. Adding names, monograms, or custom designs to tumblers, cups, and gifts allows you to charge more for your work while standing out from mass-produced items. At DIY Craft Warehouse, our blanks are designed for customization, making it easy to create products customers are excited to buy.

Is it okay if I sell trademarked products like Disney, Pixar, or sports teams?

No. Selling products with trademarked logos, characters, or phrases without permission is a violation of trademark law.

Many makers think, โ€œI see other people selling it, so why canโ€™t I?โ€ The truth is that those sellers are breaking the law and taking a legal risk โ€” and many eventually get caught. Platforms like Etsy and Amazon regularly remove listings and suspend shops for trademark violations. In some cases, trademark owners pursue legal action, which may include fines or having to surrender profits.

The safest way to grow your business is to avoid trademarked designs altogether. Instead, focus on creating original artwork, custom personalization, or trending sayings that are unique to your brand. This protects you legally and makes your products more valuable in the long run.

Bead Crafting - Questions & Answers

Q: Are silicone beads from DIY Craft Warehouse safe for teething toys and keychain crafts?
A: Yes! Our silicone beads are made from food-grade, BPA-free, non-toxic silicone thatโ€™s perfect for crafting projects such as keychains, lanyards, jewelry, and more. Theyโ€™re durable, soft to the touch, and easy to clean - making them a customer favorite for both functional and decorative designs.

When it comes to childrenโ€™s products, teething toys are regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for choking compliance and by the FDA for teething pain relief. Makers who sell finished teething items are required to obtain a Childrenโ€™s Product Certificate (CPC). For this reason, we do not market or claim our beads for use in childrenโ€™s teethers.

Q: What happens if a crafter sells teething toys without a Childrenโ€™s Product Certificate (CPC)?
A: Selling teething toys without certification is a violation of federal law. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) requires accredited third-party testing and a Childrenโ€™s Product Certificate for all childrenโ€™s products. Failure to comply can result in civil penalties of up to $100,000 per violation, with total penalties exceeding $15 million for related violations. Products may also be seized or recalled, and sellers risk suspension or permanent bans from platforms such as Etsy, Amazon, and Facebook Marketplace. In addition to regulatory penalties, sellers face potential lawsuits if a child is harmed. For these reasons, we make no claims regarding teething use and recommend our silicone beads for keychains, jewelry, lanyards, and other non-regulated craft projects.

Q: What size hole and cording work best with your silicone beads for bracelets and lanyards?
A: Most of our beads feature a 2mm hole, which works perfectly with 1.5โ€“2mm cording. This size is ideal for bracelets, necklaces, keychains, and badge reels, giving you a snug fit without slipping. We also carry thicker cord options for larger statement beads.

Q: Do bead packs come in themed color assortments for holidays, school spirit, and sports crafts?
A: Absolutely! Our bead packs are designed in coordinated color palettes, including seasonal themes, holiday patterns, and popular sports or school colors. Theyโ€™re a quick and easy way to create eye-catching projects without having to hunt for matching shades.

Cups & Tumblers - Questions & Answers

Q1: Are your stainless steel tumblers and plastic cups BPA-free and dishwasher safe?
A: Yes! All of our tumblers and cups are BPA-free and made with safe, durable materials. While the blanks themselves are dishwasher safe, we recommend hand washing decorated tumblers to protect vinyl, epoxy, or UV DTF designs.

Q2: What types of crafts can I make with blank tumblers and cups?
A: Our blanks are versatile and work great with permanent vinyl decals, UV DTF wraps, epoxy glitter coatings, and even paint. Theyโ€™re popular for making personalized gifts, team spirit items, and custom products for small businesses.

Q3: Do you offer wholesale pricing or bulk case packs of tumblers?
A: Yes! Tumblers and cups are available individually or in discounted case packs. This makes it easy for small businesses, Etsy sellers, and craft fair vendors to stock up at the best value.

Q4: Can your tumblers hold both hot and cold drinks?
A: Absolutely. Our stainless steel tumblers are double-walled and vacuum insulated, keeping drinks hot for hours and cold even longer. Plastic snow globe cups are double-walled as well, designed for fun, customizable cold drink creations.

Q5: How do I decorate a tumbler with vinyl or UV DTF?
A: First, clean your tumbler with rubbing alcohol. For vinyl, apply your decal using transfer tape and smooth out any bubbles. For UV DTF wraps, peel the backing, position the design, press it firmly, then peel away the top film. Both give a professional, long-lasting finish.

Q6: How do I make a glitter snow globe tumbler?
A: Our double-wall snow globe cups come with a silicone plug for easy filling. Add your glitter and liquid mixture through the fill hole, insert the plug securely, and seal the area with UV resin for a watertight finish. This keeps your snow globe cup leak-free and ready to shine.

Q7: Are your tumblers safe to use with epoxy or resin coatings?
A: Yes! Our stainless steel tumblers are perfect for epoxy or glitter tumbler projects. Just be sure to prep the surface before applying epoxy for the best adhesion and a smooth, glass-like finish.

Q8: Are your glass can cups safe for UV DTF and vinyl designs?
A: Yes! Our glass cans are specially made for crafting and work beautifully with UV DTF wraps or adhesive vinyl decals. Theyโ€™re crystal clear, smooth, and ready for customization.

Q9: Do glass can cups come with lids and straws?
A: Many of our glass can cups include bamboo lids and reusable straws, making them eco-friendly and ready to sell as a complete set. Check each listing for details on included accessories.

Q10: How do I care for decorated glass can cups?
A: For best results, hand wash your custom glass cups to preserve vinyl or UV DTF designs. Avoid soaking bamboo lids for long periods โ€” instead, wash quickly and let them air dry to keep them in great shape.

Craft Blanks - Questions & Answers

Q: What types of DIY projects can I make with your craft blanks?
A: Our craft blanks are designed to be versatile, so you can personalize them for just about any project. Customers love using them for custom gifts, home dรฉcor, team spirit items, holiday crafts, and small business resale.

Q: Do your craft blanks work with vinyl, resin, paint, and sublimation?
A: Yes! Our blanks are chosen with crafters in mind, so theyโ€™re compatible with vinyl, resin coatings, paint, and even sublimation (on select products). Each listing notes the best methods for decorating so you can get the results you want.

Q: Can I buy craft blanks in bulk for resale or group crafting events?
A: Definitely. We offer both individual blanks and discounted bulk packs, making it easy to stock up for craft fairs, resale shops, schools, or group events. Case packs give you the best value if you need larger quantities.

Glitter, Mica & Clay - Questions & Answers

Q1: What type of glitter works best for tumblers, resin, and slime projects?
A: We carry fine, chunky, and specialty glitters that are safe for a wide range of crafts. Fine glitter gives smooth coverage on tumblers and resin pours, while chunky glitter adds bold dimension. Many of our glitters are solvent-resistant, so they wonโ€™t dull or bleed in resin, epoxy, or slime.  We personally test all glitters and report perfromance results on the product page.

Q2: Can I use your glitter in double-wall snow globe tumblers?
A: Yes! Our glitter is perfect for snow globe tumblers. We recommend using solvent-resistant glitter so the colors stay bright in liquid-filled designs. Fine glitter gives a floating shimmer effect, while chunky glitter creates bold sparkle as it moves inside the cup.

Q3: Can mica powder be used in resin art, tumblers, and painting projects?
A: Yes! Mica powder adds rich, pearlescent color to resin and epoxy, and it can also be mixed into paint, clay, or other craft mediums. Itโ€™s an easy way to create shimmer, depth, and unique color effects in your projects.

Q4: How does the micron size of mica powder affect shimmer and coverage?
A: Mica powders come in different micron sizes, which change how they look in a project. Smaller particles (10โ€“40 microns) create a soft, satin shimmer with smooth coverage. Medium particles (40โ€“100 microns) give a brighter pearlescent effect that reflects more light. Larger particles (100+ microns) produce bold sparkle and eye-catching highlights, perfect for dramatic finishes in resin art or tumblers.

Q5: Why doesnโ€™t mica powder sparkle as much on dark or opaque bases?
A: Mica reflects light to create shimmer, so it works best on light or transparent surfaces where light can bounce through. When used in black resin, dark paints, or opaque mediums, the sparkle may appear muted. To make mica pop on dark bases, try layering it over a lighter background or mixing in interference mica for a color-shifting effect.

Q6: How do I use air dry clay to make butter slime?
A: To make butter slime, simply mix air dry clay into your prepared slime base until itโ€™s soft, fluffy, and easy to stretch. The clay blends smoothly, giving the slime a buttery texture thatโ€™s fun to play with and easy to customize with color.

DTF & UV DTF - Questions & Answers

Q: Whatโ€™s the difference between DTF and UV DTF transfers, and when should I use each?
A: DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers are made for fabrics like cotton, polyester, and blends, giving a soft, flexible print that lasts through hand-washesโ€”perfect for t-shirts, sweatshirts, and tote bags. UV DTF transfers are designed for hard surfaces such as tumblers, mugs, glass, and acrylic blanks, creating a durable, waterproof finish that wonโ€™t peel or fade.

Q: Do your DTF transfers work on cotton, polyester, and blended fabrics?
A: Yes! Our DTF transfers apply beautifully to 100% cotton, polyester, or poly-blends, making them versatile for a wide range of apparel and accessory projects.

Q: Are UV DTF cup wraps waterproof and long-lasting for tumblers and mugs?
A: Absolutely. Our UV DTF wraps are waterproof, scratch-resistant, and built to handle everyday use. They keep your designs vibrant even after repeated hand-washing and handling.

Q: How do I apply a DTF transfer to fabric?
A: Place the transfer on your fabric, press with a heat press at the recommended temperature, peel the carrier sheet, then give it a quick second press for extra durability. No special inks are required โ€” just a heat press for professional results.

Q: How do I apply a UV DTF transfer to tumblers and other hard surfaces?
A: Start with a clean, dry surface. Peel the UV DTF design from its backing, carefully position it, and press it down firmly with a squeegee or your fingers to remove bubbles. Slowly peel away the top film, and your design is ready โ€” no heat press needed.

Q: Whatโ€™s the difference between a UV DTF wrap and a UV DTF decal?
A: A UV DTF wrap is made to cover an entire tumbler or cup, creating a full-coverage design in one piece. A UV DTF decal is a smaller element, like a name, monogram, or graphic, that can be placed anywhere on a hard surface. Wraps are best for seamless all-over looks, while decals are perfect for customizing with personal touches.

Q: Do I need to seal the UV DTF after applying?
A: No sealing is required! Once applied, UV DTF transfers are already durable, waterproof, and scratch resistant. Theyโ€™re designed to hold up to everyday use without any additional top coat or sealant. Just make sure the surface is clean and smooth before applying for the best long-lasting results.  We recommend handwashing.

Q: Do you do custom DTF and UV DTF designs?
A: Not at this time. We currently offer a wide variety of pre-made designs to choose from, but custom options are not available.

Paint & Mod Podge - Questions & Answers

Q1: Whatโ€™s the best paint to use for wood crafts, furniture, and home dรฉcor projects?
A: For wood crafts and furniture, acrylic and chalk paints are the most popular choices. Acrylic paint provides vibrant, long-lasting color, while chalk paint gives a soft, matte finish thatโ€™s perfect for farmhouse or vintage styles. Both can be sealed for added durability on home dรฉcor projects.

Q2: Can your glass paints and enamel paints be used on mugs and drinkware?
A: Yes! Our glass paints and enamel paints are designed to adhere to smooth, non-porous surfaces like mugs, vases, and plates. For best results, allow them to cure properly, and hand wash instead of using the dishwasher to keep your designs looking fresh.

Q3: Whatโ€™s the difference between acrylic paint, chalk paint, and chalkboard paint?
A: Acrylic paint is versatile and works on nearly any surface, giving a smooth, durable finish. Chalk paint creates a matte, vintage look thatโ€™s easy to distress for farmhouse-style projects. Chalkboard paint is different โ€” it turns surfaces into a usable chalkboard that can be written on and wiped clean.

Q4: What types of Mod Podge are available, and how do I choose the right one for my project?
A: We carry a variety of Mod Podge formulas, including Gloss, Matte, Outdoor, Fabric, and Dishwasher-Safe versions. The best one depends on your project โ€” for example, Fabric Mod Podge works best on textiles, while Dishwasher-Safe Mod Podge is perfect for decorated mugs and tumblers.

Q5: Can Mod Podge be used as both a glue and a sealer for craft projects?
A: Absolutely. Mod Podge is a true multi-purpose product โ€” it works as a glue for attaching paper, fabric, or embellishments, and also as a clear sealer to protect and finish your project. It dries smooth and clear, making it a favorite for decoupage and DIY crafts.

Q6: What type of glue works best for rhinestones, fabric, puzzles, and photos?
A: The best glue depends on your material. For rhinestones, use rhinestone glue to keep gems secure and shiny. Fabric glue is flexible for textiles, while tacky glue is a great all-purpose choice. Puzzle and photo glue is specially made to seal and preserve your keepsakes.

Resin & Epoxy - Questions & Answers

Q1: Whatโ€™s the difference between UV resin and two-part epoxy resin?
A: UV resin cures quickly under a UV lamp, making it great for small projects like jewelry, keychains, and charms. Two-part epoxy resin takes longer to cure but is stronger and better suited for larger projects such as tumblers, trays, and casting in silicone molds.

Q2: Can I use your resin for tumblers, molds, and jewelry projects?
A: Yes! Our resins are versatile and work well for tumblers, silicone molds, jewelry, coasters, and more. Each type is tested to ensure clear finishes, strong durability, and reliable results across different crafting surfaces.

Q3: How do I prevent bubbles in resin projects?
A: To reduce bubbles, mix your resin slowly to avoid trapping air, then use a heat gun or torch to pop surface bubbles after pouring. Pouring in thin layers and keeping your workspace warm also helps resin flow smoothly with fewer bubbles.

Q4: How long does resin take to cure, and when is it safe to handle?
A: UV resin cures in minutes under a UV lamp, while two-part epoxy usually takes 24โ€“72 hours to fully cure depending on the formula and thickness. Always follow the directions on the product label for best results.

Q5: Is your resin low-odor and safe for indoor use?
A: Our resin formulas are low-odor and safe when used as directed. We recommend working in a well-ventilated space, wearing gloves, and protecting your surfaces to keep your crafting area safe and comfortable.

Q6: Whatโ€™s the best way to finish and protect resin projects?
A: Once cured, you can sand rough edges, polish for extra shine, or apply another thin resin coat for a smooth, glass-like finish. For tumblers, many crafters add a final layer of epoxy to seal designs and protect them from everyday wear.

Q7: Why did my resin stay sticky instead of curing fully?
A: Sticky resin usually means the mixture wasnโ€™t measured or mixed correctly, or the temperature was too low for proper curing. Be sure to follow the resinโ€™s mixing ratio exactly, stir slowly but thoroughly, and work in a warm, dry environment for best results.

Q8: How do I fix cloudy or dull resin?
A: Cloudy resin can result from excess moisture or incomplete curing. You can usually fix it by applying a fresh, thin layer of properly mixed resin over the surface, which will restore clarity and shine. Keeping your resin stored in a dry place also helps prevent this issue.

Q9: What supplies do beginners need to start working with resin?
A: Beginners only need a few basics: resin, mixing cups, stir sticks, gloves, and a silicone mat to protect your workspace. As you advance, you can add molds, pigments, glitter, and finishing tools. Starting simple helps you learn the basics while keeping projects fun and stress-free.

Vinyl - Questions & Answers

Q1: Whatโ€™s the difference between heat transfer vinyl (HTV) and permanent adhesive vinyl?
A: Heat transfer vinyl (HTV) is designed for fabrics like t-shirts, tote bags, and hats, and it requires a heat press or iron to apply. Permanent vinyl is adhesive-backed and sticks to hard surfaces such as tumblers, mugs, windows, and signs. Choosing the right vinyl depends on the surface youโ€™re decorating.

Q2: Is your vinyl compatible with Cricut and Silhouette cutting machines?
A: Yes! Our vinyl sheets and rolls work perfectly with Cricut, Silhouette, and most other craft cutting machines. They cut cleanly, weed easily, and apply smoothly, making them beginner-friendly and pro-approved.

Q3: Can I layer vinyl to create multi-color designs?
A: Absolutely. Both HTV and adhesive vinyl can be layered for detailed, multi-color designs. For best results, start with lighter colors and build up to darker ones, and always follow recommended press or application times between layers.

Q4: How do I apply heat transfer vinyl (HTV) to fabric?
A: Place the HTV design onto your fabric with the clear carrier sheet facing up, press with a heat press or household iron at the recommended temperature, then peel the carrier once cooled. Always check the product instructions for exact heat and time settings for your fabric.

Q5: How do I apply permanent vinyl to cups, tumblers, or glass?
A: First, make sure your surface is clean and dry. Use transfer tape to lift your design from the backing, position it carefully, and press it down firmly, smoothing out bubbles. Once the tape is removed, your design is ready โ€” no heat required.

Q6: Why isnโ€™t my vinyl sticking properly?
A: If vinyl wonโ€™t stick, the surface may have dust, oils, or residue. Always clean with rubbing alcohol before applying. For HTV, low heat or too short a press time can also cause lifting โ€” double-check your press temperature and timing.

Q7: Is vinyl dishwasher-safe and long-lasting?
A: Permanent vinyl is water-resistant and holds up well to daily use, but hand washing is recommended for cups and tumblers to extend the life of your design. Heat transfer vinyl on fabric lasts through many washes when applied correctly, especially if items are washed inside-out and dried on low.

Q8: What type of vinyl should beginners start with?
A: For beginners, we recommend starting with adhesive vinyl on hard surfaces โ€” itโ€™s quick, forgiving, and doesnโ€™t require heat. Once youโ€™re comfortable, try HTV projects on t-shirts or tote bags. Both types are easy to learn with and give professional-looking results.

About Us

In 1996, Debbie May, a registered nurse, and her husband Dave faced an unexpected challenge when their second daughter was born with disabilities. As the family struggled financially to cover the additional medical bills and necessities, Debbie had to get creative to make ends meet. She learned the art of soap making and started a small home-based business called "May Showers".

Through hard work and dedication, her products gained popularity and began selling nationwide through retail stores, craft shows, home parties, and fundraisers. The business evolved into a wholesale supply company and became known as Wholesale Supplies Plus.

By 2019, Wholesale Supplies Plus supported over 100 jobs in Ohio and had served more than 300,000 customers. Debbie and Dave had a conversation with their children, who were growing up and found they didn't have a passion for the business. After much consideration, Debbie and Dave decided to sell the company and retire.

In 2021, Katie, Debbie's youngest daughter, found her passion in the sublimation and heat transfer vinyl industry. Katie started her business with a Circuit machine and sublimation printer/press, which quickly expanded to include professional-grade equipment. In college she made cell phone cases, tumblers, glass cans, and apparel for friends and family.  She often became frustrated with high supply costs and profit-killing shipping fees. During a conversation at Christmas, Katie expressed her concerns about how challenging it can be for crafters to make enough profit to support themselves.

In 2023, Katie graduated from college with a degree in childhood education and a dream of starting a business that helped others make sublimation and heat transfer vinyl crafts. After a long talk, Debbie eagerly came out of retirement to help Katie achieve her vision but had one condition...to include a few other crafts that Debbie loves such as slime making and epoxy/resin art. Katie agreed and together they opened DIY Craft Warehouse.

For those of you that may be wondering about Dave, he has agreed to help organize the warehouse and set up racking but insists he has walked this walk and wants to play a supporting role in helping the girls succeed. For now, DIY Craft Warehouse is very much a daughter-mother duo.

How does DIY Craft Warehouse keep prices affordable?

We keep costs low by using simple (and whenever possible, eco-friendly) packaging instead of fancy bottles, jars, or labels. This approach reduces shipping and product expenses, allowing us to pass the savings directly to our customers.

Discounted Case Pack Questions

Q1: Who can buy discounted case packs โ€” are they only for businesses?
A: Anyone can purchase case packs! While theyโ€™re especially popular with small businesses, Etsy sellers, and craft fair vendors, hobby crafters also love them for stocking up on tumblers and cups at the best value.

Q2: Do case packs include a mix of colors and styles, or are they all the same item?
A: Case packs are sold as multiples of the same cup or tumbler for consistency and convenience. If youโ€™re looking for variety, you can purchase single cups and tumblers separately.

Q3: Are discounted case packs eligible for returns or exchanges?
A: Yes. Case packs are eligible for returns under our standard return policy. If youโ€™re trying a new style, we suggest starting with a single tumbler before purchasing a full case.

Q4: What products are available in case packs?
A: Case packs are offered exclusively for cups and tumblers. Youโ€™ll find many of our most popular sizes and styles available in bulk so you can stock up with confidence.

Q5: How do case packs benefit small business crafters?
A: Case packs save money, reduce shipping costs, and keep you fully stocked for custom orders, craft shows, and seasonal sales. Theyโ€™re a smart way for pro makers to increase profits and stay prepared for busy seasons.

You can also sign up for our โ€œEmail Me When Availableโ€ feature to be notified when items are restocked.

What is your approach to operations and staffing?

We run a lean, efficient operation to keep prices competitive. All team members - including office staff - jump in to help with picking, packing, and shipping during unusually high order days. This teamwork helps us maintain quick turnaround times and affordability without ever compromising quality.

At the same time, we believe that taking care of our employees directly benefits our customers. We pay our staff well, and on slower order days or Friday afternoons in the summer, our team enjoys paid time off. A happy, well-supported, and efficient staff means your orders are handled with care, accuracy, and pride - because when our team thrives, so do our customers.

Do you have a minimum order size?

We believe every maker should have access to wholesale pricing. Thatโ€™s why all discounts are available directly on our website - no special price lists or hidden tiers.
